What is ITAD?
ITAD is a term that has become common across IT industry professionals, but what is ITAD? According to
TechTarget, ITAD commonly referred to as IT asset disposition or IT asset disposal is a common industry term or phrase that encompasses disposing or getting of your IT assets so that they can either be reused (directly or for parts) and safely disposed of without causing environmental damage. Instead of ending up in a landfill as electronic waste (e-waste), value can still be derived from this older equipment. In summary, ITAD means the disposal of your old technology and equipment.
What is an end-user?
An end user is simply the individual who will be using a device or piece of technology that aids them. An end user in this instance, would refer to the employee or individual utilizing technology and equipment that is owned by the business or organization that they belong to.
Challenges of ITAD
One of the most challenging parts of IT asset disposal is making sure that your company’s data is protected when you are ready to upgrade or adjust the technology that your company is utilizing. When partnering with a company to properly dispose of your IT assets and equipment, it is important to work with a reliable, established company that has strong data protection and disposal policies.
Two extremely important keys to ITAD is to make sure that your data is safely destroyed and that the hardware you are disposing of is repurposed and resold properly. Partnering with organizations that have a zero landfill policy for items they’re disposing of and have a strong, clear and upfront disposal and destruction process are key to a seamless and secure ITAD process.
What does it mean to be “secure” when disposing of IT assets?
Secure ITAD means that your personal and company data are not transferable, trackable, viewable or accessible to the next user in any manner. Whether that is destroying the remaining data on your hard drive, or resetting your company computers prior to repurposing them.
The purpose of this is to protect your company’s important proprietary information. Disposing of IT assets improperly has the potential to lead to loss of important data, corruption of data, the transferring of data to inappropriate (or unauthorized) personnel and even theft of data by other individuals or organizations. Eliminating this with secure IT asset disposition is the first step in upgrading or modifying your company’s or team’s equipment.
How do I know if my ITAD is secure?
Communication is key. Talking with local ITAD companies that promote secure ITAD or IT asset disposition and can effectively communicate their process to you is imperative. It is important to investigate how the company effectively destroys your data and what they do with the parts afterwards. To find out more about how to securely dispose of your IT assets,
